Can I use a virtual mailbox for an LLC, Etsy, YouTube, or Google Business Profile?

A U.S. guide for small sellers and creators: which address each platform or filing actually asks for, and where a virtual mailbox fits, based only on official pages.

A virtual mailbox can keep your home address off some public pages, but the answer is not the same everywhere. Each platform, and each state, asks for a different kind of address for a different reason. One field may only need somewhere mail can reach you; another may need a place where you live, work, or can be served legal papers in person.

This is an independent guide, not an official IRS, Secretary of State, Etsy, YouTube or Google publication. It is general information, not legal advice. Where an official page did not settle a question, this guide says so rather than guessing.

Quick answers

Use What I verified Official source URL
LLC: registered agent (examples) It depends on your state. In the four states checked, the agent's address must be a physical street address in that state, and mailbox-type addresses are restricted. Washington says no PO Boxes or PMBs; Texas says the registered office may not be solely a mailbox service. https://www.sos.wa.gov/corporations-charities/business-entities/maintain-business-compliance/registered-agents
LLC: mailing address (examples) Some states ask for a separate mailing address. Colorado says a registered agent's separate mailing address may be a commercial address or PO Box in Colorado. Washington says an agent may add a PO Box for notices. https://www.sos.state.co.us/pubs/business/FAQs/regAgent.html
LLC: principal office (California example) California's LLC-1 form asks for a principal office street address and says not to enter a PO Box. The form does not say whether a private mailbox counts. https://bpd.cdn.sos.ca.gov/llc/forms/llc-1.pdf
Etsy Payments, individual or sole proprietor Etsy asks for your home address to verify your identity. A mailbox address is not what this field asks for. https://help.etsy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360001980067-How-to-Verify-Your-Seller-Information-for-Etsy-Payments
Etsy seller-info confirmation If asked for an address, Etsy says it must be your taxpayer address, not a PO or Postal Box. Private mailboxes are not mentioned. https://help.etsy.com/hc/en-us/articles/14553858116759-Etsy-Asked-Me-to-Confirm-My-Seller-Info
Etsy shipping-label return address Etsy's label page explains how to change the Shipping From address and says it is also used for USPS pickups. It does not say whether a PO Box or mailbox is accepted. https://help.etsy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000336887-USPS-Shipping-Labels-on-Etsy
YouTube channel contact info YouTube's channel profile help asks only for an email under Contact info. No postal address is requested there. https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2657964
AdSense for YouTube payments address Google mails a PIN to this address. It must be able to receive standard mail; Google recommends where you reside or work and says other address types might cause problems. No outright ban on mailboxes was found. https://support.google.com/adsense/answer/13863682
Google Business Profile No for a virtual office or remote mailbox. Google says a rented mailing address you don't operate from isn't eligible, and PO boxes or remote mailboxes aren't acceptable. https://support.google.com/business/answer/3038177

LLC and other state business filings

Short answer: it depends on your state, and on which address the form is asking for. There is no single national rule here, and this guide does not attempt a 50-state table. The four states below are verified examples, not a complete list.

State forms often ask for more than one address. A registered agent is the person or company that accepts lawsuits and official notices for the business. Colorado describes the agent as your official point of contact to receive service of process and legal and state documents. That is a different job from a mailing address, which is simply where the business gets its post, and from a principal office address, which some states also ask for.

State What the official source says
Washington The registered agent must have a physical address in Washington, and PO Boxes and PMBs are prohibited. The agent may also give a PO Box for receiving notice. If you have no physical address in the state, you may hire a Commercial Registered Agent.
Colorado The agent needs a physical street address in Colorado, customarily open during normal business hours, where documents can be accepted in person. Commercial or PO Box addresses cannot be used as that street address. A separate agent mailing address may be a commercial address or PO Box, but must be in Colorado. Professional registered agents are available for hire.
Texas State law says the registered office must be a street address where process can be personally served on the registered agent, and may not be solely a mailbox service or a telephone answering service. An organization serving as agent must have an employee available there during normal business hours.
California The LLC-1 form asks for an initial street address of the principal office (do not enter a PO Box) and a separate mailing address if different. An individual agent needs a California street address, not a PO Box; alternatively you can name a California registered corporate agent.

What this means for a virtual mailbox, based only on these sources: in all four example states, a mailbox address does not satisfy the registered agent's address. Washington names PMBs directly. Texas and Colorado describe a place where papers can be handed to someone in person, which a mail-receiving service on its own does not meet under their wording.

For a separate mailing address, two of the example states clearly allow a PO Box in the agent's mailing address field. Whether a private mailbox at a CMRA is accepted for a business mailing address or a principal office was not stated on the pages checked. Treat it as unconfirmed and ask your state's filing office.

If privacy is the goal, all four example states point to the same option: naming a professional or commercial registered agent instead of yourself. This guide does not compare agent services or prices. Also ask your state which addresses appear in its public business search before you file, since that is what strangers can look up.

Etsy

Short answer: it depends on the field. Etsy keeps several addresses, and the official help pages treat them differently.

Identity and tax addresses

Etsy Payments, for individuals and sole proprietors: Etsy lists first name, last name, date of birth, home address and, in some places, a tax number, so it can verify your identity. Based on that wording, this is not a field for a mailbox address. Etsy notes that most sellers are individuals or sole proprietors.

Etsy Payments, for incorporated businesses: Etsy asks for a legal business address along with the entity name as it appears on your government business document. Etsy's page does not say whether a virtual mailbox is accepted; it says your details must match your government-issued business documentation.

Seller-info confirmation: when Etsy asks some sellers to confirm their information under laws such as the INFORM Consumers Act, its help page says that if asked for your address, "this must be your taxpayer address, and not a PO or Postal Box." So a PO Box is a clear no there. Private mailboxes are not mentioned, so whether one is accepted is unclear from Etsy's wording.

What buyers may see

Etsy says that if you are registered as a business on Etsy and make over $20,000 in sales in 12 consecutive months, buyers will see your business address in order confirmation emails, but only if it differs from the primary shop owner's home address.

For sellers with business or trader status who sell to EU or EEA buyers, Etsy shows trader status, business registration number, the business's location and the business's address (only if different from your personal home address) in shop details and listings.

The return address on shipping labels

Etsy's USPS label page explains how to change the Shipping From address under Shipping settings and Shipping label options. It also says that address is used when you schedule a USPS pickup, so it needs to be where your parcels actually are on pickup day. The page does not say whether a PO Box or private mailbox may be used as the label return address; that question is unconfirmed here.

If you use a mailbox for returns, check that the location accepts the packages and carriers you expect. The PO box vs. virtual mailbox guide covers those trade-offs.

YouTube

Short answer: the public channel contact field asks for an email, not a postal address. The address that matters for monetized creators is the AdSense for YouTube payments address, and Google's wording there is cautious rather than a clear yes or no.

Channel contact info (public)

YouTube's help page for managing your channel profile has a Contact info step: sign in to YouTube Studio, go to Customization and Profile, and enter your email under Contact info. No postal address is requested there. You do not need to publish a mailing address on your channel to use this field.

AdSense for YouTube payments address (private)

If you are in the YouTube Partner Program, YouTube says Google will ask you to verify your identity and address when earnings hit the verification threshold. Google mails a 6-digit PIN to your payments address by international standard mail, with no tracking number. If you don't verify within 4 months, your channel is demonetized.

Google's AdSense help defines a valid payments address as one that can receive international standard mail. It says: "We recommend using a payments address where you currently physically reside or work. Other types of addresses might cause problems when signing up or verifying yourself for AdSense." For U.S. addresses, it asks for a CASS-verified address with city, state and a valid ZIP Code.

YouTube's setup page adds that the PIN card is mailed to your physical address, and that the address in your account should match the address recognized by your local post office.

What that means: the pages checked do not ban a PO Box or virtual mailbox outright, but they don't approve one either. Google recommends where you live or work and warns other address types might cause problems. It is unclear, so this guide does not recommend a mailbox here. This is a private account address used to mail a PIN; the help pages checked do not describe it as shown on your channel.

Not covered

Merchandise and shopping features, Super Thanks, and U.S. tax information for YouTube earnings were not checked for this guide. Look at the current YouTube help page for that feature before assuming an address is or isn't needed.

Google Business Profile

Short answer: no. Google's guidelines do not allow a virtual office or a remote mailbox as a Business Profile address.

Google's guidelines say: "P.O. boxes or mailboxes located at remote locations aren't acceptable." They also say that if your business rents a physical mailing address but doesn't operate out of that location, also known as a virtual office, that location isn't eligible for a Business Profile. Google adds that a business showing its address should keep permanent fixed signage of its business name at that address.

Google's eligibility page says a business must make in-person contact with customers during its stated hours. It lists online-only businesses, including brands, organizations and artists, as ineligible, along with any business whose address is a P.O. box or mailbox in a remote location. So a creator or online-only shop may not qualify for a Business Profile at all, whatever address they have.

There is a privacy-friendly route for one group. Google says a service-area business, one that visits or delivers to customers but doesn't serve them at its own address, should remove its address from the profile and list service areas instead. Its own example is a plumber who runs the business from a home address and clears that address from the profile. This is about hiding a real address, not replacing it with a mailbox.

Before you file or publish an address

Check the current official page first. Platform rules and state forms change. Before you file a form or publish an address, open the current official page for that exact field and read it again. When it is unclear, ask the platform or the state filing office rather than assuming a mailbox is allowed.

Whatever you choose, a private mailbox at a CMRA still requires USPS Form 1583 and identity checks, and it is not anonymous. USPS also says its PO Box Street Addressing option may not be used as your residence or place of business on legal documents. Details are in the PO box vs. virtual mailbox guide.
